Vera Rubin (1928 - 2016) was an American astronomer whose measurements of the rotation of spiral galaxies provided some of the first persuasive evidence for the existence of dark matter. Early life and education
Vera Florence Cooper Rubin was born on 23 July 1928 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and developed an early fascination with the night sky. [1] She earned a bachelor's degree in astronomy from Vassar College in 1948, completed a master's degree at Cornell University, and received her doctorate from Georgetown University in 1954, where she studied the distribution of galaxies across the sky. Galaxy rotation and dark matter
Beginning in the 1960s at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, Rubin worked with the instrument builder Kent Ford to measure how stars orbit within spiral galaxies. [2] Their observations of the Andromeda Galaxy and dozens of others revealed that stars in the outer regions moved just as fast as those near the center, contradicting the expectation that orbital speeds should decline with distance from the bright galactic core. [1] The result implied that galaxies are embedded in vast halos of unseen mass, lending strong observational support to the idea of dark matter. [2]
Later career and recognition
Rubin spent most of her career in the Carnegie Institution's Department of Terrestrial Magnetism and became a persistent advocate for women in science. [1] In 1993 she received the National Medal of Science, and in 1996 she became the first woman since Caroline Herschel, in 1828, to be awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society. Rubin died on 25 December 2016 in Princeton, New Jersey. [1] Her work helped establish dark matter as a foundational question in astrophysics, and although many colleagues felt her contributions merited a Nobel Prize, she was never awarded one. [2] The Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile was named in her honour, the first United States national observatory named for a woman. [3]
