Galileo Galilei (1564 - 1642) was an Italian astronomer, physicist, and mathematician whose pioneering use of the telescope and insistence on observation and experiment helped lay the foundations of modern science. [1] Often called the "father of observational astronomy," he championed the Sun-centered model of the cosmos, a stance that brought him into lasting conflict with the Catholic Church.
Early life
Galileo was born on 15 February 1564 in Pisa, then part of the Duchy of Florence, the eldest child of the musician and music theorist Vincenzo Galilei. [2] He enrolled at the University of Pisa intending to study medicine but soon turned to mathematics and natural philosophy, leaving without completing a degree. In 1589 he returned to Pisa as a lecturer in mathematics before moving to the University of Padua, where he taught for nearly two decades.
Physics and motion
During his years at Padua, Galileo investigated falling bodies and pendulums, arguing that objects of different masses fall at the same rate in the absence of air resistance. His studies of uniformly accelerated motion and projectile trajectories anticipated the mechanics later formalized by Isaac Newton, and his emphasis on mathematical description and controlled experiment marked a decisive break from the purely philosophical study of nature. Astronomical discoveries
After learning of the newly invented telescope in 1609, Galileo built improved versions and turned them toward the night sky. He observed craters and mountains on the Moon, discovered the four largest satellites of Jupiter—now known as the Galilean moons—resolved the Milky Way into countless stars, and recorded the phases of Venus. [1] Published in Sidereus Nuncius (1610), these findings offered striking observational support for the heliocentric system proposed by Nicolaus Copernicus.
Conflict with the Church
Galileo's advocacy of heliocentrism drew opposition from theologians who held that it contradicted Scripture. In 1616 the Church condemned the Copernican view, and after publishing his Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems (1632), Galileo was tried by the Roman Inquisition. [4] Found "vehemently suspect of heresy," he was forced to recant and spent his remaining years under house arrest at Arcetri, where he continued working despite failing eyesight.
Legacy
Galileo died at Arcetri on 8 January 1642. His conviction that nature must be read mathematically and tested through observation made him a central figure of the Scientific Revolution, and later scientists including Albert Einstein regarded him as a father of modern science. [3] In 1992 the Catholic Church formally acknowledged errors in its handling of his case, and he was later inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame; the Galilean moons and NASA's Galileo spacecraft carry his name.
