Nicolaus Copernicus (1473 - 1543) was a Renaissance-era mathematician and astronomer who formulated a model of the universe that placed the Sun, rather than the Earth, at its centre.[1] His heliocentric theory, set out in De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (1543), challenged the long-dominant geocentric worldview and is widely regarded as a defining event that launched the Scientific Revolution.

Early life and education

Copernicus was born on 19 February 1473 in Toruń, a city in the region of Royal Prussia within the Kingdom of Poland.[1] After the death of his father, he was raised under the guardianship of his maternal uncle, Lucas Watzenrode, who later became Bishop of Warmia. In 1491 he enrolled at the University of Kraków (the Jagiellonian University), where he studied the liberal arts and developed an interest in astronomy and mathematics. He continued his education in Italy, attending the universities of Bologna, Padua and Ferrara, where he read canon law, medicine and the classics.[2]

Church career and public life

In 1497 Copernicus was appointed a canon of the cathedral chapter of Warmia, a post that provided him with income and the leisure to pursue his scholarly interests for the rest of his life.[2] Beyond astronomy he served in a wide range of capacities, working as a physician, jurist, diplomat and administrator. He also wrote on monetary reform, and his treatise on coinage articulated principles later associated with the quantity theory of money and with the idea that inferior currency tends to drive superior currency out of circulation.

The heliocentric model

Around 1510 Copernicus outlined his heliocentric ideas in a short manuscript known as the Commentariolus, which circulated privately among astronomers.[1] He spent decades refining his system, in which the Earth rotates daily on its axis and, together with the other planets, revolves around a stationary Sun. His full account appeared in De revolutionibus orbium coelestium ("On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres"), published in Nuremberg in 1543, the year of his death.[3]

Legacy

The reordering of the cosmos proposed by Copernicus is often called the Copernican Revolution, while the broader idea that humanity occupies no privileged position in the universe is known as the Copernican principle.[2] Although his model retained circular orbits and was not fully accurate, it provided the foundation on which Johannes Kepler, Galileo Galilei and Isaac Newton later built. Copernicus died on 24 May 1543 in Frombork and is commemorated in numerous ways, including his induction into the International Space Hall of Fame.
