Carl Sagan (1934 - 1996) was an American astronomer, planetary scientist, and author widely regarded as one of the most influential science communicators of the twentieth century.[1] He advanced the public understanding of astronomy and cosmology, reaching hundreds of millions of people through his 1980 television series and companion book Cosmos, while also making lasting contributions to planetary research and the search for life beyond Earth.
Early life and education
Carl Edward Sagan was born on November 9, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York.[1] A childhood fascination with the stars set the course for his career, and he pursued his studies at the University of Chicago, where he earned a bachelor's degree, a master's degree in physics, and a doctorate in astronomy and astrophysics.
Scientific career
Sagan made significant contributions to planetary science, most notably his work on the atmosphere of Venus, whose extreme surface temperatures he helped explain as the product of a runaway greenhouse effect.[2] He also studied the atmospheres of Mars and of Saturn's moon Titan. For much of his career he was a professor at Cornell University, where he directed the Laboratory for Planetary Studies, and he served as an adviser on several NASA robotic missions, including the Mariner, Viking, Voyager, and Galileo programs.
Cosmos and public outreach
In 1980 Sagan co-wrote and presented Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, a thirteen-part series that became one of the most widely watched programs in the history of American public television. The accompanying book was a best seller and confirmed his reputation as a gifted explainer of difficult ideas.[1] A leading advocate for the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, he helped design the Pioneer plaque and the Voyager Golden Record, and he co-founded The Planetary Society to promote space exploration.[3]
Writing and honours
Sagan was a prolific author whose books ranged from popular science to fiction. His 1977 work The Dragons of Eden won the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction, and his novel Contact was later adapted into a feature film.[2] A committed defender of scientific skepticism, he also received the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal and the National Academy of Sciences Public Welfare Medal.
Legacy
Sagan died on December 20, 1996, in Seattle, following an illness affecting his bone marrow.[1] He is remembered for expanding public engagement with science, for his advocacy of reason and evidence, and for conveying a lasting sense of wonder about the universe. Numerous awards, institutions, and a landing site on Mars have been named in his honour.
