Ulugh Beg (1394 - 1449) was a Timurid sultan, astronomer and mathematician who ruled from Samarkand and became one of the foremost observational astronomers of the medieval world. [1] He founded a major observatory in Samarkand and directed the compilation of the Zij-i-Sultani, a star catalogue and set of tables whose positional measurements remained among the most accurate produced before the telescope. [2] A grandson of the conqueror Timur, he was also a patron of learning whose court made Samarkand a leading center of science, before he was killed in 1449. [3]

Early life and rule

Ulugh Beg was born on 22 March 1394 in Soltaniyeh, in present-day Iran, as a grandson of the conqueror Timur (Tamerlane), founder of the Timurid dynasty. [1] After Timur's death, his father Shah Rukh consolidated the empire, and Ulugh Beg was placed in charge of Samarkand and the surrounding province of Transoxiana while still young. Although he held political and military authority for decades, he showed comparatively little interest in conquest and devoted much of his energy to scholarship, mathematics and astronomy. [2]

Samarkand as a center of learning

Under Ulugh Beg, Samarkand became one of the intellectual capitals of the fifteenth century. He established a madrasa that attracted mathematicians and astronomers from across the Islamic world, gathering scholars such as Jamshid al-Kashi and Qadi Zada al-Rumi. [3] The institution combined religious instruction with advanced teaching in the mathematical sciences, reflecting Ulugh Beg's conviction that astronomy required rigorous training and careful observation.

The observatory and Zij-i-Sultani

Around the 1420s Ulugh Beg built a large observatory in Samarkand, equipped with a great meridian instrument, a sextant or arc of immense size that allowed unusually precise measurement of the positions of the Sun, Moon and stars. [2] The observations made there were compiled into the Zij-i-Sultani, a catalogue of roughly a thousand stars together with tables for computing celestial positions. Because the measurements relied on very large instruments rather than telescopes, they achieved a level of accuracy that stood among the best of the pre-telescopic era. Ulugh Beg also refined values for astronomical constants, including a careful determination of the length of the year. [1]

Death and legacy

Ulugh Beg's later years were marked by political conflict. Following the death of his father he faced revolts, and in 1449 he was killed on the orders of his own son, Abd al-Latif. [3] His scientific reputation, however, endured: the Zij-i-Sultani circulated widely and was studied in Europe as well as the Islamic world. The ruins of his Samarkand observatory were rediscovered in the twentieth century, and a lunar crater bears his name, commemorating his standing as one of the great observational astronomers before the modern age.
