Thomas Alva Edison (1847 - 1931) was an American inventor and businessman whose developments in electric power, sound recording, and motion pictures reshaped modern life. Holding more than 1,000 United States patents, he built the world's first industrial research laboratory and became one of the most prolific inventors in history.[1]

Early life

Edison was born on February 11, 1847, in Milan, Ohio, the youngest of seven children. His family later moved to Port Huron, Michigan, where he received little formal schooling and was largely educated by his mother. As a teenager he worked as a telegraph operator, a trade that sharpened his interest in electrical communication and provided the practical grounding for his earliest inventions.[2]

Menlo Park and the invention factory

In 1876 Edison established a laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey, widely regarded as the first organized industrial research facility. There he assembled teams of machinists, chemists, and engineers to pursue invention on a systematic, commercial scale. A rapid succession of breakthroughs from the site earned him the popular nickname the "Wizard of Menlo Park."[1]

Major inventions

Edison's best-known achievements include the phonograph, introduced in 1877 as the first device capable of recording and reproducing sound, and a commercially practical incandescent light bulb unveiled in 1879. Rather than the lamp alone, he engineered an entire electrical system of generators, wiring, and metering to distribute power, opening the Pearl Street Station in New York City in 1882.[2] His later work in motion pictures, including the Kinetoscope, helped lay the foundations of the film industry.

Business and later years

Edison's electric-lighting ventures were consolidated in 1892 into the General Electric Company, which became one of the largest corporations of the twentieth century. He also took part in a public rivalry over competing standards for electricity distribution, advocating direct current against the alternating-current systems that ultimately prevailed. In his later decades he pursued research in mining, cement, and storage batteries from an expanded laboratory complex in West Orange, New Jersey.[3]

Legacy

By the time of his death on October 18, 1931, Edison had accumulated more than a thousand United States patents and an international reputation as the archetype of the modern inventor. Among his many honors were the Congressional Gold Medal, the Franklin Medal, and the Matteucci Medal, and his laboratories are today preserved as a national historical park.[3]
