Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky (1857 - 1935) was a Russian and Soviet rocket scientist, inventor, and schoolteacher regarded as one of the founding fathers of modern astronautics. Working in near isolation in provincial Russia, he derived the theoretical foundations of spaceflight, including the rocket equation that bears his name, long before any rocket could reach space.[1]

Early life and education

Tsiolkovsky was born on 5 September 1857 in the village of Izhevskoye, in the Ryazan Governorate of the Russian Empire. At around the age of ten he contracted scarlet fever and lost most of his hearing, which left him socially isolated and unable to follow a conventional schooling.[2] Largely self-taught, he studied mathematics, physics, and astronomy on his own, spending several years reading in the libraries of Moscow before passing the examinations required to become a certified teacher.

Teaching and early research

For most of his working life Tsiolkovsky taught mathematics and physics at schools in Borovsk and later in Kaluga, where he settled permanently. He pursued scientific research in his spare time, building his own apparatus and carrying out experiments at home. His early work included studies of aerodynamics and the design of an all-metal dirigible, though these efforts attracted little attention from the scientific establishment of the day.

Theory of spaceflight

In 1903 Tsiolkovsky published "The Exploration of Cosmic Space by Means of Reaction Devices," a work that set out the mathematical principles of rocket-powered flight. In it he presented what became known as the Tsiolkovsky rocket equation, relating a rocket's change in velocity to its exhaust velocity and the ratio of its initial and final mass.[1] He argued that liquid propellants such as liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen would be required to reach orbital speeds, and he later proposed multistage rockets, or "rocket trains," to overcome the limits of a single vehicle. He also anticipated concepts including orbiting space stations, airlocks for leaving a spacecraft, and closed-cycle life-support systems.

Philosophy and writing

A prolific writer, Tsiolkovsky combined technical work with science fiction and philosophical essays associated with the movement known as Russian cosmism, which envisioned humanity's expansion beyond Earth. He summarised this outlook in a much-quoted phrase from a 1911 letter:

The Earth is the cradle of humanity, but one cannot live in the cradle forever.

Later years and legacy

Tsiolkovsky's work was largely overlooked early in his career but won growing recognition after the 1917 Russian Revolution, when the Soviet state granted him a pension and celebrated him as a pioneer of aeronautics; in 1932 he received the Order of the Red Banner of Labour.[2] He continued writing until his death in Kaluga on 19 September 1935. Honoured alongside Robert Goddard and Hermann Oberth as a founder of rocketry, he influenced later Soviet engineers such as Sergei Korolev. A crater on the far side of the Moon bears his name, and he was inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame.
