James Watt (1736 - 1819) was a Scottish inventor, mechanical engineer, and chemist whose radical improvements to the steam engine were among the driving forces of the Industrial Revolution.[1] His introduction of a separate condenser dramatically increased the engine's efficiency, and his later partnership with the manufacturer Matthew Boulton turned that innovation into a commercial and industrial success.

Early life and education

James Watt was born on 19 January 1736 in Greenock, a port town on the west coast of Scotland.[1] Showing an early aptitude for mathematics and practical mechanics, he travelled to London to train as an instrument maker before returning to Scotland, where he established himself as a mathematical instrument maker at the University of Glasgow.[2] His work there brought him into contact with leading scientists of the day and gave him access to the university's scientific apparatus.

The separate condenser

In the early 1760s Watt was asked to repair a working model of the Newcomen atmospheric engine, then the standard means of pumping water from mines. He recognised that the engine wasted enormous amounts of energy because its single cylinder had to be repeatedly heated and cooled with each stroke.[1] In 1765 he conceived the idea of condensing the steam in a separate vessel, keeping the main cylinder permanently hot. This separate condenser, patented in 1769, greatly reduced fuel consumption and became the foundation of his reputation.

Partnership with Boulton

Progress on developing the engine into a marketable product was slow until Watt entered into partnership with the Birmingham manufacturer Matthew Boulton in 1775. Operating from the Soho Manufactory, the firm of Boulton & Watt produced engines for mines, mills, and factories across Britain.[3] Watt continued to innovate, devising mechanisms to convert the engine's reciprocating motion into rotary motion, a double-acting engine, and a centrifugal governor to regulate speed. He is also credited with popularising the term "horsepower" as a measure of an engine's output.

Watt's refinements did not invent the steam engine, but they made it efficient and reliable enough to become the workhorse of industry.

Legacy

Watt was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow in recognition of his contributions.[2] He died on 25 August 1819 at his home, Heathfield Hall, near Birmingham. His name endures in everyday use through the watt, the unit of power in the International System of Units, adopted in his honour to acknowledge his lasting influence on engineering and science.[1]
