Gustave Eiffel (1832 - 1923) was a French civil engineer and entrepreneur whose firm designed and built the Eiffel Tower, completed in Paris for the 1889 Exposition Universelle. [1] A pioneer of large-scale wrought-iron construction, he also engineered major railway bridges and viaducts and supplied the internal iron framework for the Statue of Liberty. [2] In his later years he turned from structural engineering to research in meteorology and aerodynamics. [1]

Early life and education

Gustave Eiffel was born on 15 December 1832 in Dijon, in the Burgundy region of France. [1] He was educated at the Collège Sainte-Barbe and then at the École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures (École Centrale Paris), from which he graduated in 1855 with training in chemistry and engineering. [1] Early in his career he became involved in the construction of iron railway bridges, a field that was expanding rapidly with the growth of France's rail network.

Bridges and viaducts

Eiffel established his reputation through the design of large metal structures. [2] Among his notable works was the Maria Pia Bridge over the Douro River at Porto, Portugal, completed in 1877, followed by the Garabit Viaduct in southern France, whose great arch carried a railway high above the Truyère valley. [1] His firm developed advanced methods for calculating and assembling wrought-iron trusses, allowing structures of unprecedented span and height. He also provided the internal iron skeleton that supports the copper skin of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbour. [2]

The Eiffel Tower

Eiffel's best-known project was the tower that bears his name, built as the centerpiece of the 1889 Exposition Universelle marking the centenary of the French Revolution. [1] Rising about 300 metres, it was the tallest man-made structure in the world at the time of its completion. [3] The design, developed with the engineers Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier and the architect Stephen Sauvestre, drew both admiration and protest, but the tower endured and became a defining symbol of Paris and of modern engineering. Later life and legacy

Eiffel's later career was affected by his involvement in the failed Panama Canal company, whose collapse led to legal proceedings, though his engineering reputation eventually recovered. [1] He devoted his remaining decades to scientific research, using the tower as a laboratory for studies in meteorology, radio transmission and aerodynamics, and building wind tunnels to test airflow. [2] For his contributions he received honours including the Legion of Honour and, in the field of aeronautics, the Langley Gold Medal. [1] He died in Paris on 27 December 1923. His work is remembered as a landmark in the transition to iron and steel construction, and the Eiffel Tower remains one of the most recognisable structures in the world. [3]
