Seymour Roger Cray (1925 - 1996) was an American electrical engineer and computer architect widely regarded as the father of supercomputing. Over four decades he designed a succession of the fastest computers in the world and founded the firm Cray Research, whose machines dominated scientific and defense computing during the 1970s and 1980s.[1]

Early life and education

Cray was born on 28 September 1925 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and attended Chippewa Falls High School. After serving in the United States Army during the Second World War, he studied at the University of Minnesota, where he earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and a master's degree in applied mathematics.[1]

Early career

Cray began his career at Engineering Research Associates, an early Minnesota computer company, where he worked on digital machines and gained a reputation for meticulous circuit design. He later joined Control Data Corporation (CDC), a company he helped found, and there designed a series of influential large-scale computers.[2]

At CDC he was the principal architect of the CDC 6600, released in 1964 and generally recognized as the first commercially successful supercomputer. Its successor, the CDC 7600, extended his approach of relentlessly optimizing for speed. His work established design principles that shaped high-performance computing for decades.[2]

Cray Research and the Cray-1

In 1972 Cray left CDC to establish Cray Research, a company built around his singular goal of producing the fastest computers in the world. The company's first product, the Cray-1, was delivered in 1976 and became one of the most famous machines in computing history. Its distinctive C-shaped tower, vector-processing design, and dense packaging made it the standard against which supercomputers were measured.[3]

Cray followed the Cray-1 with the multiprocessor Cray X-MP and the Cray-2, and later founded a separate venture, Cray Computer Corporation, to pursue the ambitious Cray-3. He was known for a solitary, hands-on design style and a preference for proven technologies applied with extreme care.[1]

Cray was celebrated for pursuing raw computational speed above all else, an approach that made his name synonymous with the supercomputer itself.

Recognition

Cray's contributions were honored with the Eckert-Mauchly Award, the W. Wallace McDowell Award, the Harry H. Goode Memorial Award, the Howard N. Potts Medal, and the IEEE Ernst Weber Engineering Leadership Recognition. He was later inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.[1]

Death and legacy

Cray died on 5 October 1996 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, from injuries sustained in a traffic accident. He is remembered as a pioneer whose designs defined the supercomputer era, and his name endures in the Cray line of machines that remained central to scientific computing long after his death.[1]
