al-Jazari (1164 - 1206) was a Muslim polymath, engineer and inventor from the Jazira region of Upper Mesopotamia who served as chief engineer at the court of the Artuqid dynasty. [1] He is best known for the Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices, completed in 1206, which describes and illustrates around fifty automata, clocks and water-raising machines. Early life and the Artuqid court

Al-Jazari was born in 1164 in the Jazira, the region of Upper Mesopotamia from which his name is derived. [1] Little is recorded of his early years, but he spent his career in the service of the Artuqid dynasty, a Turkoman line that ruled parts of eastern Anatolia and northern Mesopotamia. [1] Following in his father's profession, he worked as chief engineer at the Artuqid palace in Diyar Bakr, in what is now southeastern Turkey, serving a succession of rulers over roughly twenty-five years. The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices

In 1206, at the request of his patron, al-Jazari completed the Kitab fi ma'rifat al-hiyal al-handasiyya, or Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices. [3] The treatise describes some fifty mechanical contrivances, grouped into categories such as water clocks and candle clocks, automated vessels for serving drinks, machines for raising water, fountains, and objects of everyday use. [3] Each device is accompanied by detailed instructions and drawings intended to allow reconstruction, making the work as much a practical engineering manual as a scholarly text. [3]

Mechanisms and inventions

Among the best-known devices in the book is the elephant clock, an elaborate timekeeper that combined figures and moving parts drawn from several cultures within an elephant-shaped housing. [4] Al-Jazari also designed the monumental castle clock and numerous programmable automata, including humanoid figures and a musical ensemble driven by rotating pegged drums. [1] His pumps and water-raising machines employed mechanisms such as the crankshaft, segmental gears and the camshaft, and his designs are frequently cited in histories of the development of mechanical engineering. Al-Jazari died in 1206, shortly after finishing his treatise.
