Rudolf Diesel (1858 - 1913) was a German inventor and mechanical engineer best known for developing the compression-ignition internal combustion engine that bears his name. [1] Patented in the 1890s, the diesel engine offered far greater thermal efficiency than the steam and petrol engines of the era, and it went on to power ships, locomotives, trucks, and industrial machinery worldwide. Early life and education
Rudolf Christian Karl Diesel was born on 18 March 1858 in Paris to Bavarian parents who had settled in France. [1] The family was forced to leave for London at the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, after which the young Diesel was sent to Augsburg, in his parents' native Bavaria, to continue his schooling. [1] A gifted student, he went on to study at the Technical University of Munich, where he was strongly influenced by the thermodynamics lectures of the refrigeration pioneer Carl von Linde. [1]
The diesel engine
Diesel became preoccupied with the poor efficiency of existing engines, most of which wasted the great majority of their fuel's energy as heat. [1] Drawing on the theoretical work of Sadi Carnot, he sought to build a rational engine that would approach the ideal of maximum thermodynamic efficiency. [1] His central idea was to compress air to such a high pressure that its temperature alone would ignite injected fuel, dispensing with the spark ignition used in petrol engines. [1] He filed for a patent in the early 1890s and, working with the firms Maschinenfabrik Augsburg and Krupp, built a series of prototypes. [1] In 1897 he demonstrated a working engine that achieved an efficiency roughly double that of contemporary steam engines. [1]
Commercial success and later years
Diesel licensed his invention widely and became wealthy, though he was also drawn into costly patent disputes and struggled with the reliability of early production engines. [1] He envisioned his engine running on a range of fuels, including vegetable oils, and hoped it would help small manufacturers compete with large steam-powered industry. [2] Beyond engineering he held broad social interests and was an enthusiast of the constructed language Esperanto. [1]
Disappearance and legacy
On the night of 29 to 30 September 1913, Diesel vanished from the steamer Dresden while crossing the English Channel to England; his body was later recovered but not brought aboard, and the cause of his death has remained a subject of speculation. [2] His engine, however, endured and was continually refined. [1] Prized for its efficiency and durability, the diesel engine became the dominant power source for shipping, rail, heavy road transport, and much industrial and agricultural machinery, and Diesel was later inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
