Hedy Lamarr (1914 - 2000) was an Austrian-American film actress and inventor best known for co-developing a wartime frequency-hopping spread spectrum system with composer George Antheil. [1] Celebrated in the 1930s and 1940s as a Hollywood star, she pursued invention privately and, in 1942, patented a technique for guiding torpedoes by rapidly switching radio frequencies to resist enemy jamming. [2] The underlying idea foreshadowed later spread-spectrum methods central to wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS, and she was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014. Early life and film career
Hedy Lamarr was born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler on 9 November 1914 in Vienna, then part of Austria-Hungary. [1] She began acting in European films as a teenager and drew international attention for her role in the Czech-Austrian film Ecstasy (1933). In the mid-1930s she left Europe for the United States, where the producer Louis B. Mayer signed her to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and renamed her Hedy Lamarr. [2] She became a prominent Hollywood leading lady, appearing in films including Algiers (1938) and Samson and Delilah (1949).
Invention and the frequency-hopping patent
Away from the screen, Lamarr was a self-taught inventor who tinkered with mechanical and technical problems throughout her life. [1] During the Second World War she collaborated with the avant-garde composer George Antheil on a system to make radio-guided torpedoes resistant to jamming. Their design rapidly and synchronously switched the transmitter and receiver among many radio frequencies, so that an adversary could not easily block the control signal. [2] The pair received a U.S. patent for the technique in 1942, describing it as a "secret communication system." [3]
The concept was not adopted by the U.S. Navy during the war, and Lamarr received little recognition for it in her lifetime. Later engineers, however, developed related spread-spectrum methods that became foundational to secure and reliable wireless communication.
Later life
Lamarr continued acting into the 1950s before largely withdrawing from public life. [1] She published an autobiography and spent her later years in relative seclusion, eventually settling in Florida. She died in Casselberry, Florida, on 19 January 2000.

Lamarr's dual identity as a celebrated film star and a serious inventor has made her a widely cited figure in histories of both cinema and technology.
