Nikola Tesla (1856 - 1943) was a Serbian-American inventor, electrical engineer, and physicist best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating-current (AC) electricity supply system. Early life and education
Tesla was born on 10 July 1856 in Smiljan, then part of the Austrian Empire and today in Croatia. [1] He studied at the Karlovac Gymnasium before attending the Graz University of Technology, where he developed an intense interest in electrical engineering, and later spent time at Charles University in Prague. [1] His early exposure to the study of electrical machines laid the groundwork for the ideas he would pursue throughout his career.
Career in America
In 1884 Tesla emigrated to the United States, where he briefly worked for Thomas Edison before striking out on his own. [2] He soon partnered with the industrialist George Westinghouse, whose company backed Tesla's alternating-current designs during the so-called "War of the Currents," a commercial and technical rivalry with Edison's direct-current systems. [2] Tesla's induction motor and polyphase system of AC generation, transmission, and distribution ultimately prevailed as the practical standard for delivering electricity over long distances.
Major work and inventions
Tesla was a prolific inventor who was granted numerous patents over his lifetime. Beyond the AC power system, he experimented with wireless lighting, high-frequency and high-voltage electricity, and the wireless transmission of energy and signals. [3] The Tesla coil, a resonant transformer circuit he devised in the 1890s, became one of his most enduring inventions and remains widely used in demonstrations and education. His ambitious Wardenclyffe project sought to transmit information and power wirelessly, though it was never completed.
Recognition and later years
During his lifetime Tesla received a range of honors, including the Edison Medal, the Elliott Cresson Medal, and the John Scott Award, and he was recognized by scientific and engineering societies as a fellow. [1] Despite his acclaim, his later years were marked by financial difficulty, and he died in relative obscurity in New York City on 7 January 1943. [1]
