Justus von Liebig (1803 - 1873) was a German chemist regarded as a principal founder of organic chemistry and agricultural chemistry. Early life and education
Justus Liebig was born on 12 May 1803 in Darmstadt, then capital of the Grand Duchy of Hesse. As a boy he spent time in his father's shop, which sold pigments, oils, and drugs, and developed an early fascination with chemical substances. [1] He studied at the University of Bonn and the University of Erlangen, where he obtained his doctorate, and then continued his training in Paris under leading French chemists, including Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac. The Giessen laboratory
In 1824, still in his early twenties, Liebig was appointed professor at the University of Giessen. There he built one of the first laboratories devoted to systematic instruction in practical chemistry, training students through hands-on experimental work rather than lectures alone. [1] This teaching model, which produced a generation of influential chemists, became a template for the modern research university and helped make Germany a center of chemical science. [3] Liebig also refined methods of organic analysis, devising apparatus that made the measurement of carbon and hydrogen in organic compounds far more reliable. [2]
Agricultural chemistry
Liebig applied chemistry to living systems and to farming. In his 1840 work on organic chemistry and its application to agriculture, he argued that plants draw their nutrition from inorganic minerals and nitrogen in the soil rather than from humus alone. [1] This insight underpinned the mineral theory of plant nutrition and the principle later known as the law of the minimum, which holds that growth is limited by the scarcest essential nutrient. His ideas provided a scientific basis for the manufacture of chemical fertilizers and helped establish agricultural chemistry as a discipline. [2]

Liebig had been raised to the nobility in 1845, adding the honorific von to his name, and in 1852 he moved to the University of Munich.
