Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier was born in Paris on 26 August 1743 into a wealthy family. He studied at the Collège des Quatre-Nations and trained in law at the Paris Law Faculty, qualifying as a lawyer, but his deeper interest lay in the natural sciences, particularly chemistry, geology, and mathematics [1]. His early scientific work, including a study on improving urban street lighting, brought him to the attention of the Academy of Sciences, to which he was elected at the age of 25.

Scientific work

Lavoisier's central contribution was to make careful measurement the foundation of chemical inquiry. Through precise weighing of reactants and products, he demonstrated that mass is conserved in chemical reactions, a principle now known as the law of conservation of mass [2]. His experiments on combustion and respiration showed that burning and rusting involve combination with a component of the air, which he named oxygen; he also named hydrogen and helped establish that water is a compound rather than an element.

These results allowed Lavoisier to dismantle the prevailing phlogiston theory, which held that a fire-like substance was released during combustion [2]. In 1787 he collaborated with colleagues on the Méthode de nomenclature chimique, a systematic naming scheme that remains the basis of modern chemical terminology.

Major work

In 1789 Lavoisier published his Traité élémentaire de chimie (Elementary Treatise on Chemistry), often described as the first modern chemistry textbook. It presented a unified view of the field, included one of the earliest tabulations of chemical elements, and stated the conservation of mass as a guiding principle [3].

He was a Fellow of the Royal Society, and his name is among the 72 inscribed on the Eiffel Tower honoring French scientists and engineers. The mathematician Joseph-Louis Lagrange is reported to have remarked after his execution that it took only a moment to cut off his head, but France might not produce another like it in a century.
