Dmitri Mendeleev (1834 - 1907) was a Russian chemist and educator best known for formulating the periodic law and devising the first widely recognized periodic table of the chemical elements, published in 1869.[1] By arranging the known elements according to atomic weight and recurring chemical properties, he revealed an underlying order in matter and deliberately left gaps for elements that had not yet been discovered.
Early life
Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev was born on 27 January 1834 in Tobolsk, in western Siberia, the youngest of a large family. Following the death of his father and years of financial hardship, he travelled west to pursue his education, entering the Main Pedagogical Institute in Saint Petersburg, where he trained as a science teacher.[2] He later undertook advanced study in chemistry, including a period of research abroad, before returning to Russia to build his academic career.
Academic career
Mendeleev became a professor at Saint Petersburg State University, where he taught chemistry for many years. Finding the existing textbooks inadequate, he began writing his own comprehensive treatise, Principles of Chemistry, which became a widely used and influential work. His effort to arrange the elements systematically for teaching purposes led directly to his most celebrated discovery.
The periodic table
In 1869 Mendeleev presented a table that ordered the chemical elements by increasing atomic weight while grouping together those with similar properties. Recognizing that certain positions did not fit the known elements, he left deliberate gaps and boldly predicted the existence and approximate properties of undiscovered elements, which he named eka-aluminium, eka-boron, and eka-silicon.[2] The subsequent discovery of gallium, scandium, and germanium, closely matching his predictions, offered striking confirmation of the periodic law and secured his international reputation.
Other contributions
Beyond the periodic table, Mendeleev studied the properties of solutions and the thermal expansion of liquids, and he took a keen interest in Russia's petroleum and mineral industries. In his later years he directed the country's Central Bureau of Weights and Measures, helping to modernize national standards of measurement.[3]
Legacy
Mendeleev received numerous honours during his lifetime, including the Davy Medal, the Faraday Lectureship Prize, and the Copley Medal, and he was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society.[2] Element 101, mendelevium, was named in his honour, and the periodic table endures as one of the central organizing principles of modern chemistry. The year 2019 was designated the International Year of the Periodic Table to mark the 150th anniversary of his achievement.
