Joseph Priestley (1733 - 1804) was an English chemist, natural philosopher, theologian, and political theorist best known for his experimental work on gases and for the isolation of oxygen. [1] A prolific investigator of what was then called pneumatic chemistry, he identified or characterised numerous gases and devised the method for producing carbonated water. [2] A dissenting minister whose religious and political views drew fierce opposition, he emigrated to the United States in 1794 and spent his final years in Pennsylvania. [1]
Early life and education
Priestley was born on 13 March 1733 in Birstall, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, into a family of cloth dressers who belonged to the tradition of English religious Dissent. [1] Educated in part at Batley Grammar School and later at a dissenting academy, he acquired an unusually broad command of languages, philosophy, and natural science. His nonconformist background barred him from the established universities and shaped a lifelong commitment to free inquiry in both religion and learning. [2]
Scientific work
Priestley became one of the leading figures of eighteenth-century pneumatic chemistry, the experimental study of gases or "airs." [1] In 1774 he heated mercuric oxide and collected a gas in which a candle burned with extraordinary vigour; he had isolated oxygen, which he interpreted within the prevailing phlogiston theory as "dephlogisticated air." [2] He also isolated or described a range of other gases, and his experiments dissolving fixed air in water led to the first practical method of making carbonated water. [3] His observation that plants could restore air made unfit for breathing anticipated later understanding of photosynthesis. Priestley recorded his findings in the multivolume Experiments and Observations on Different Kinds of Air. [1] His scientific standing was recognised by election as a Fellow of the Royal Society and the award of its Copley Medal in 1773. [2]
Religion and politics
Alongside his science, Priestley was an influential dissenting minister and a founder of English Unitarianism, publishing extensively on theology, education, and government. [1] He defended civil and religious liberty and expressed sympathy for the American and French revolutions, positions that made him a target of public hostility. In July 1791 a mob attacked his home and laboratory in Birmingham during the so-called Priestley Riots, destroying his books, instruments, and papers. [2]
Later life and legacy
Facing continued hostility in Britain, Priestley emigrated with his family to the United States in 1794 and settled in Northumberland, Pennsylvania, where he continued to write and experiment until his death on 6 February 1804. [1] He is remembered as a central figure in the chemistry of gases, and his discovery of oxygen is regarded as a turning point in chemistry, even though Antoine Lavoisier's later reinterpretation would displace the phlogiston framework Priestley defended.
