Jabir ibn Hayyan (c. 721 - c. 815) was an alchemist, physician, and polymath of the early Islamic world, later known in Latin Europe as Geber. [1] An enormous body of Arabic writings on alchemy, medicine, cosmology, and philosophy is attributed to him, and this Jabirian corpus became one of the most influential foundations of pre-modern chemistry. [2] Whether the works were composed by a single 8th-century figure or by a later school of authors remains debated among historians. [1]
Historical figure
According to traditional accounts, Jabir ibn Hayyan was born around 721 in Tus, in the Khorasan region of Persia, into a family connected with the pharmacist's trade. [2] Later biographers describe him as a pupil of Ja'far al-Sadiq, the sixth Shia imam, and as a figure linked to the Barmakid viziers at the Abbasid court of Harun al-Rashid. [1] He is said to have spent his final years in Kufa, where he reportedly died around 815. Because the surviving sources about his life are late and often legendary, the details of his biography cannot be firmly established. [3]
The Jabirian corpus
Jabir's reputation rests on an exceptionally large collection of Arabic writings attributed to him, collectively known as the Jabirian corpus. [1] These texts range across alchemy, medicine and pharmacy, cosmology, astrology, numerology, and philosophy, and include organized groupings such as the Seventy Books and the Books of the Balance. [2] The corpus is notable not only for its size but for its effort to present alchemy as a systematic discipline grounded in theory rather than a loose set of secret recipes. [3]
Alchemical thought and method
The works develop a theory that metals are formed from two principles, sulfur and mercury, combined in differing proportions and qualities — an idea that dominated alchemical and early chemical thinking for centuries. [2] Central to the corpus is the science of the balance (mizan), which sought to relate the hidden natures of substances to measurable quantities. [1] The texts also describe practical laboratory operations, including distillation, sublimation, calcination, and crystallization, together with the apparatus and materials used to carry them out, reflecting a strong emphasis on controlled experiment. Legacy
From the 12th century, several Jabirian treatises were translated into Latin, where their author became known as Geber and was ranked among the great authorities of alchemy. [2] A separate group of Latin works long circulated under the name Geber is now generally credited to a later European writer, sometimes called pseudo-Geber, distinct from the Arabic Jabir.
