Amedeo Avogadro (1776 - 1856) was an Italian physicist and chemist best known for Avogadro's law, the hypothesis that equal volumes of gases at the same temperature and pressure contain equal numbers of molecules.[1] Proposed in 1811, his idea was largely overlooked for decades before becoming a cornerstone of molecular theory, and the Avogadro constant was later named in his honour.[3]
Early life and education
Lorenzo Romano Amedeo Carlo Avogadro was born on 9 August 1776 in Turin, then capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia, into a family of distinguished lawyers.[1] Following family tradition, he studied ecclesiastical law and earned a doctorate in 1796, practising as a lawyer for several years.[2] By the early 1800s his interests had turned decisively toward mathematics and physics, which he pursued through private study before taking up teaching.[1]
Scientific career
In 1809 Avogadro began teaching at a college in Vercelli, and in 1820 he was appointed to the first Italian chair of mathematical physics at the University of Turin.[2] Political upheaval led to the temporary suppression of the position, but he was reinstated in 1834 and held the chair until his retirement in 1850.[1] Working somewhat apart from the leading scientific centres of Europe, he published across physics and chemistry while remaining outside the main currents of contemporary debate.[2]
Avogadro's law
In 1811 Avogadro published a paper reconciling John Dalton's atomic theory with the gas-combining volumes measured by Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac.[1] He proposed that equal volumes of different gases, at the same temperature and pressure, contain equal numbers of particles, drawing a clear distinction between atoms and what he called compound molecules.[3] The idea explained why gases combine in simple volume ratios, yet it found little acceptance during his lifetime, in part because the concept of the molecule was not yet widely understood.[1]
Recognition and legacy
Avogadro died in Turin on 9 July 1856, before his ideas won general recognition.[1] Four years later, at the 1860 Karlsruhe Congress, the chemist Stanislao Cannizzaro invoked Avogadro's hypothesis to resolve long-standing confusion over atomic and molecular weights.[2] The number of particles in one mole of a substance, roughly 6.022 x 10^23, was subsequently named the Avogadro constant in his honour, securing his place among the founders of modern physical chemistry.[3]
