Vinton Gray Cerf (b. 1943) is an American computer scientist widely regarded as one of the "fathers of the Internet" for his central role in designing the protocols that underpin global data networking.[1] With Robert E. Kahn he developed the Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), the architecture that allows disparate computer networks to interconnect, work for which the pair received the 2004 Turing Award.[2]

Early life and education

Vinton Gray Cerf was born on 23 June 1943 in New Haven, Connecticut. He attended Van Nuys High School in California, where he formed friendships with several people who would later shape early networking research. He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Stanford University, then completed a master's degree and a doctorate in computer science at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he worked on early packet-switching networks during the development of the ARPANET.[1]

Designing the Internet

In the 1970s Cerf collaborated with Robert E. Kahn on the design of TCP/IP, the fundamental communication standards that enable independent networks to exchange data as a single "internetwork." Their 1974 paper describing the protocol laid the conceptual foundation for the modern Internet. On 1 January 1983 the ARPANET formally adopted TCP/IP, a transition often cited as the moment the modern Internet came into being. Cerf later worked at the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), where he helped fund and manage the continued development of Internet technologies.[1]

Later career

During the 1980s Cerf joined MCI, where he led the development of MCI Mail, one of the first commercial electronic mail services connected to the Internet. He was a founding president of the Internet Society and served as chairman of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Since 2005 he has been a vice president and Chief Internet Evangelist at Google, promoting Internet access worldwide and advising on emerging network technologies, including research into interplanetary networking.[3]

Honors and legacy

Cerf has received many of the highest honors in science and engineering. He and Kahn were awarded the 2004 Turing Award, often called the "Nobel Prize of computing," and in 2005 they received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States' highest civilian honor.[2] His other distinctions include the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, the Japan Prize, and the Marconi Prize, and he is a Foreign Member of the Royal Society. He is widely recognized as one of the principal architects of the network that reshaped global communication, commerce, and culture.[4]
