Mark Zuckerberg

Mark Elliot Zuckerberg (b. 1984) is an American technology entrepreneur, programmer, and philanthropist best known as the co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Meta Platforms, the company behind Facebook. ^[1] He built one of the world's largest social networking companies from a project he started as a Harvard University undergraduate.

Early life and education

Mark Elliot Zuckerberg was born on May 14, 1984, in White Plains, New York, and grew up in nearby Dobbs Ferry. ^[2] He showed an early aptitude for computer programming, attended Ardsley High School before transferring to Phillips Exeter Academy, and took part in the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth. In 2002 he enrolled at Harvard University, where he studied psychology and computer science.

Founding of Facebook

In February 2004, while a sophomore at Harvard, Zuckerberg launched a social networking site initially limited to Harvard students, together with fellow students Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. ^[1] The service expanded rapidly to other universities and then to the general public. Zuckerberg left Harvard to focus on the company, relocating it to Palo Alto, California. Facebook grew into one of the world's largest social platforms, and the company held its initial public offering in 2012. ^[2]

Meta and later ventures

As chief executive, Zuckerberg oversaw major acquisitions, including the photo-sharing service Instagram in 2012 and the messaging service WhatsApp in 2014. ^[2] In 2021 the parent company was renamed Meta Platforms, reflecting a strategic emphasis on the "metaverse" and immersive technologies. Through a dual-class share structure he has retained a controlling voting stake in the company while remaining its chairman and CEO.

Philanthropy

In 2015 Zuckerberg and his wife, physician Priscilla Chan, established the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, pledging to devote the majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes in areas such as science, education, and public health. ^[4] He is also a signatory of the Giving Pledge.

Recognition

Zuckerberg was named Time magazine's Person of the Year in 2010. ^[3] He has since received the Axel Springer Award and been inducted into the California Hall of Fame, and he has repeatedly appeared among lists of the world's most influential people. As one of the youngest self-made billionaires, he has been the subject of extensive public and media attention.
