Robert Melancton Metcalfe (b. 1946) is an American electrical engineer, computer scientist, and entrepreneur best known for co-inventing Ethernet, the local-area networking technology that became a foundation of the wired internet. [1] He co-founded the networking company 3Com and is credited with Metcalfe's Law, a widely cited rule of thumb describing the value of communication networks.

Early life and education

Metcalfe was born on April 7, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up on Long Island. He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning bachelor's degrees in electrical engineering and management in 1969, and went on to Harvard University for graduate work in applied mathematics. [1] While completing his doctorate he studied packet-switched networks, including the ARPANET and Hawaii's ALOHAnet, whose approach to shared-channel communication influenced his later work.

Xerox PARC and Ethernet

In the early 1970s Metcalfe joined Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), a hub of computing innovation. There, in 1973, he and David Boggs devised Ethernet, a method for connecting computers over a shared cable so they could exchange data in packets. [1][2] Ethernet was designed to link the personal workstations and laser printers being developed at PARC, and it was later standardized through an industry effort that helped it become the dominant wired networking technology.

3Com and Metcalfe's Law

In 1979 Metcalfe left Xerox to found 3Com, a company that made networking hardware such as adapter cards and helped bring Ethernet into widespread commercial use. [1] He also popularized what became known as Metcalfe's Law, which holds that the value of a network grows roughly with the square of the number of connected users, an idea frequently invoked in discussions of telecommunications and the internet economy. Later career

After leaving 3Com, Metcalfe became a widely read technology commentator, writing a long-running column for the trade publication InfoWorld. [1] He later worked in venture investing and academia, serving as a professor of innovation and entrepreneurship at the University of Texas at Austin and, subsequently, as a research affiliate in computational engineering at MIT.

Honors and legacy

Metcalfe has received many of computing's highest honors. He was awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the IEEE Medal of Honor, and the Marconi Prize, and he is a member of the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the Internet Hall of Fame. [4] In 2022 he received the ACM A.M. Turing Award, often called the "Nobel Prize of computing," for the invention, standardization, and commercialization of Ethernet. [2]
