Raymond Kurzweil (b. 1948) is an American inventor, computer scientist, author and futurist widely regarded as one of the leading pioneers of pattern-recognition technology and a prominent public advocate of the idea that machine intelligence will eventually rival and surpass that of humans. [1] His inventions include the first print-to-speech reading machine for the blind, and his books have made him one of the best-known contemporary voices on the future of artificial intelligence. [2]
Early life and education
Kurzweil was born on February 12, 1948, in the Queens borough of New York City. [1] He showed an early aptitude for technology, and as a teenager built a computer capable of composing music, which he demonstrated on the television program I've Got a Secret in 1965. He went on to study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning a degree in computer science and literature in 1970.
Inventions and business ventures
In the 1970s Kurzweil founded Kurzweil Computer Products and developed the first omni-font optical character recognition system, able to read text set in virtually any typeface. In 1976 he combined this technology with a flatbed scanner and a text-to-speech synthesizer to create the Kurzweil Reading Machine, the first device able to read printed text aloud for blind and visually impaired users. [1] The achievement earned him the Grace Murray Hopper Award in 1978.
He later founded Kurzweil Music Systems, whose K250 synthesizer (1984) was among the first electronic instruments able to convincingly reproduce the sound of a grand piano and other orchestral instruments, as well as Kurzweil Applied Intelligence, a company focused on speech recognition. [2]
Futurism and writing
Kurzweil is best known to the general public as a futurist. In a series of books, including The Age of Intelligent Machines (1990), The Age of Spiritual Machines (1999) and The Singularity Is Near (2005), he argued that information technologies improve at an exponential rate, a pattern he termed the "law of accelerating returns." [1] He is closely associated with the concept of the technological singularity, a projected future point at which artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence and drives rapid, transformative change.
Later career and recognition
In December 2012 Kurzweil joined Google as a director of engineering, working on machine learning and natural language understanding. [1] He is also a co-founder of Singularity University. His contributions have been recognized with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, presented in 1999, the Lemelson–MIT Prize in 2001, and induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2002.
