Margaret Hamilton (b. 1936) is an American computer scientist, systems engineer, and mathematician who directed the team that developed the onboard flight software for NASA's Apollo space program. [1] As a leader at the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory, she helped establish software as a rigorous engineering discipline and is widely credited with popularizing the term "software engineering."

Early life and education

Margaret Hamilton was born on 17 August 1936 in Paoli, Indiana. [1] She studied mathematics, earning a bachelor's degree from Earlham College. [1] She later pursued further study associated with the University of Michigan before beginning work in software at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. [2]

Apollo program

At the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory (later the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory), Hamilton became director of the Software Engineering Division, where she led the team responsible for the onboard flight software used by the Apollo command module and lunar module. [2] Her work emphasized error detection and recovery, allowing the guidance computer to prioritize critical tasks under heavy load.

During the descent of Apollo 11 in July 1969, the guidance computer became overloaded with tasks yet continued to function because the software was designed to shed lower-priority work and focus on the landing, contributing to the mission's success. [3]

Software engineering

Hamilton advocated treating software development as a formal engineering discipline at a time when the field was still emerging, and she is widely credited with helping to popularize the term "software engineering."
