Louis Pasteur (1822 - 1895) was a French chemist and microbiologist whose research on fermentation and microorganisms transformed medicine and industry. He provided decisive support for the germ theory of disease, invented the heat-treatment process known as pasteurization, and developed vaccines against anthrax and rabies. Early life and education
Louis Pasteur was born on 27 December 1822 in Dole, in eastern France, the son of a tanner. He studied at the Lycée Saint-Louis and later entered the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, where he trained in chemistry and physics. [1] As a young researcher he investigated the crystalline forms of tartaric acid, showing that certain molecules exist as mirror-image forms. This work on molecular asymmetry, or chirality, laid foundations for the field of stereochemistry. [2]
Fermentation and the germ theory
Appointed to academic posts at Strasbourg, Lille, and later the École Normale Supérieure, Pasteur turned to the study of fermentation. He demonstrated that fermentation and the souring of milk, wine, and beer were caused by living microorganisms rather than by spontaneous chemical change. [1] His experiments with swan-neck flasks provided strong evidence against the doctrine of spontaneous generation, showing that microbial life did not arise from non-living matter but from pre-existing organisms carried in the air. Pasteurization and disease
To prevent spoilage, Pasteur devised a method of gently heating liquids to destroy harmful microbes without ruining the product, a technique that became known as pasteurization. [1] His findings reinforced the germ theory of disease, the idea that many illnesses are caused by microorganisms. This principle influenced medical practice, including the antiseptic methods later adopted in surgery. [2]
Vaccination
In the 1870s and 1880s Pasteur extended his work to animal and human diseases. He developed an attenuated vaccine against chicken cholera and, in 1881, a vaccine against anthrax that he tested in a widely publicised trial on livestock. [2] In 1885 he successfully treated a boy bitten by a rabid dog with a rabies vaccine, one of the first effective interventions against the disease. [1]
Later life and legacy
In 1888 the Institut Pasteur was established in Paris to continue research into infectious disease and vaccination; Pasteur directed it until his death. [3] He received numerous honours, including the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour and the Copley and Rumford Medals of the Royal Society. [1] Pasteur died on 28 September 1895 at Saint-Cloud, near Paris. His work is regarded as a foundation of modern microbiology and immunology, and his name endures in the process of pasteurization and in institutions bearing his name worldwide. [3]
