Gregor Mendel (1822 - 1884) was an Austrian biologist and Augustinian friar who is recognized as the founder of the modern science of genetics. Working in the garden of St. Thomas's Abbey in Brno, he carried out a long series of hybridization experiments on pea plants that revealed the statistical patterns of inheritance now known as the Mendelian laws. [1] Although his findings, published in 1866, attracted little notice during his lifetime, they were rediscovered around 1900 and became a cornerstone of biology. [2]

Early life and education

Gregor Johann Mendel was born on 20 July 1822 into a German-speaking farming family in Hynčice, then the village of Heinzendorf in the Moravian part of the Austrian Empire. [1] Financial hardship shadowed his schooling, but his ability carried him to the Philosophical Institute of the University of Olomouc, where he studied physics and philosophy. In 1843 he entered the Augustinian Abbey of St. Thomas in Brno and took the religious name Gregor, a step that relieved his poverty and gave him access to a community of teachers and scholars. [1] Between 1851 and 1853 the abbey sent him to the University of Vienna, where he studied physics, mathematics, and natural science under teachers who included the physicist Christian Doppler. [2]

Experiments on plant hybridization

From about 1856 to 1863 Mendel cultivated and analyzed thousands of pea plants (Pisum sativum) in the abbey garden, tracking clearly defined traits such as seed shape, flower color, and stem length across successive generations. [2] By counting the offspring and examining the ratios mathematically, he concluded that heredity is carried by discrete units passed from parents to offspring according to consistent rules. From this reasoning he formulated what became known as the law of segregation and the law of independent assortment. [2] He presented his results to the Natural History Society of Brno in 1865 and published them the following year as Versuche über Pflanzen-Hybriden (Experiments on Plant Hybridization). [1]

Later life

In 1868 Mendel was elected abbot of St. Thomas, and the administrative duties of the office, together with a prolonged dispute over the taxation of monasteries, gradually drew him away from research. [1] He remained active in beekeeping, meteorology, and astronomy, and was recognized locally as a capable administrator, receiving the Commander's Cross of the Order of Franz Joseph. [1] He died in Brno on 6 January 1884, his biological work still largely overlooked by the wider scientific community. [1]

Legacy

Mendel's paper was cited only rarely for more than three decades after its appearance. Around 1900 the botanists Hugo de Vries, Carl Correns, and Erich von Tschermak independently reached similar conclusions and drew attention to his earlier findings. [2] This rediscovery established Mendel as the founder of genetics, and terms such as Mendelian inheritance entered ordinary scientific use. [3] His pairing of controlled experiment with quantitative analysis is regarded as a model of scientific method, and his principles remain foundational to genetics and evolutionary biology. [3]
