Lila Tretikov

Lila Tretikov (b. 1978) is a Russian-American software engineer and technology executive best known for serving as executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia, from 2014 to 2016.^[1]

Early life and education

Lila Tretikov was born on 25 January 1978 in Moscow, then part of the Soviet Union.^[1] She later emigrated to the United States and studied at the University of California, Berkeley, where she focused on computer science.^[1] Early in her career she developed expertise in software engineering and enterprise technology.

Career in technology

Before entering the nonprofit sector, Tretikov built a career in the software industry. She spent several years at SugarCRM, a company known for its customer relationship management software, where she held senior technology and product positions, including chief information officer.^[1] Her background combined hands-on software engineering with product and business management.

Wikimedia Foundation

In 2014 Tretikov was appointed executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation, succeeding Sue Gardner.^[2] In the role she oversaw the organization that supports Wikipedia and its sister projects, which are written and maintained by volunteer editors around the world. Her tenure emphasized the Foundation's technology and product strategy.

In early 2016 she announced her resignation amid internal disagreements over strategic direction, including a search initiative that drew criticism from staff and members of the volunteer community.^[3] She stepped down in March 2016.

Later career and legacy

After leaving the Wikimedia Foundation, Tretikov continued to work in the technology sector, taking on senior technology and product leadership roles at major companies.^[1] She has been recognized within the industry, including with a Stevie Award. As one of relatively few women to lead a major internet organization, her time at the Wikimedia Foundation coincided with wider debate about how the movement should balance technological innovation with its community-driven, volunteer ethos.
