Katie Bouman (b. 1989) is an American computer scientist and electrical engineer whose research on computational imaging contributed to the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration's release of the first image of a black hole in 2019.[1]
Early life and education
Katie Bouman was born on May 9, 1989, in West Lafayette, Indiana, and attended West Lafayette Junior-Senior High School.[1] She earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan before completing a master's degree and a PhD in electrical engineering and computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where her research focused on computational imaging.[1]
Research and imaging algorithms
Bouman's work centers on computational methods for reconstructing images from sparse or noisy measurement data. During her graduate studies at MIT she led development of an algorithm known as CHIRP (Continuous High-resolution Image Reconstruction using Patch priors), designed to combine measurements from radio telescopes distributed around the world into a coherent image.[2]
Event Horizon Telescope
Bouman joined the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), an international collaboration of more than 200 researchers that links radio observatories across the globe so they function together as a single, Earth-sized instrument.[3] On April 10, 2019, the collaboration released the first direct visual image of a black hole, showing the supermassive object at the center of the galaxy Messier 87.[3] Bouman helped coordinate the development and testing of the imaging methods used to reconstruct and verify the result. A photograph of her reacting to the image circulated widely online, and she became a public face of the announcement; she and her colleagues consistently emphasized that the achievement was the product of a large, collaborative team effort.[1]
Later career and recognition
After completing her doctorate, Bouman worked as a postdoctoral researcher with the EHT group before joining the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where she became an assistant professor in the Department of Computing and Mathematical Sciences.[4] Her laboratory continues to study computational imaging across astronomy, medical imaging, and other fields. In 2019 she was named one of the BBC's 100 Women.[1]
