Joshua Lederberg (1925 - 2008) was an American molecular biologist and geneticist who shared the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering that bacteria can exchange genetic material, and who later became an influential figure in artificial intelligence and astrobiology.[1]

Early life and education

Joshua Lederberg was born in Montclair, New Jersey, on 23 May 1925, and grew up in New York City. A precocious student, he attended Stuyvesant High School and entered Columbia University at fifteen, earning a bachelor's degree in zoology in 1944.[2] He began medical studies at Columbia but interrupted them to pursue laboratory research, moving to Yale University to work with the biochemist Edward Tatum, where he completed his doctorate in 1947.

Discovery of bacterial genetics

Working with Tatum at Yale, Lederberg demonstrated that bacteria could recombine genetic material through a mating-like process later called bacterial conjugation, overturning the long-held assumption that bacteria reproduced only asexually. The finding established microbial genetics as a discipline and opened the door to modern molecular biology.[1] With his student Norton Zinder he subsequently identified transduction, the transfer of genes between bacteria by viruses, and he coined the term "plasmid" for the extrachromosomal elements now central to biotechnology.

For these discoveries concerning genetic recombination in bacteria, Lederberg shared the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with George Beadle and Edward Tatum, at the age of thirty-three.[3]

Artificial intelligence and exobiology

In 1959 Lederberg founded the department of genetics at Stanford University. There he became an early advocate for exobiology, the study of possible life beyond Earth, advising NASA on protecting other worlds from contamination and on experiments carried aboard the Viking Mars landers. At Stanford he also collaborated with the computer scientist Edward Feigenbaum and the chemist Carl Djerassi on Dendral, one of the first expert systems, which applied artificial intelligence to infer molecular structures from mass-spectrometry data.[4]

Later career and legacy

From 1978 to 1990 Lederberg served as president of Rockefeller University in New York. He remained a prominent adviser on science policy, biological-weapons defense, and emerging infectious diseases. His many honors included the National Medal of Science in 1989 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2006. He died in New York City on 2 February 2008, remembered as a founder of bacterial genetics whose curiosity spanned medicine, computing, and the search for extraterrestrial life.[1]
