James Dewey Watson (1928 - 2025) was an American molecular biologist, geneticist, and zoologist best known for co-discovering the double-helix structure of DNA in 1953 with Francis Crick, a breakthrough that revealed the molecular basis of heredity and laid the foundation for modern genetics. [1] For this work he shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He later became a leading figure in genomics as an early director of the Human Genome Project and the longtime head of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

Early life and education

Watson was born on 6 April 1928 in Chicago, Illinois. A precocious student, he entered the University of Chicago at fifteen and received a bachelor's degree in zoology in 1947. [1] He then completed a doctorate in zoology at Indiana University Bloomington in 1950, where he studied under the geneticist Salvador Luria and grew interested in the physical nature of the gene.

The double helix

In 1951 Watson joined the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, where he began working with the British physicist Francis Crick. Drawing on X-ray diffraction data produced by Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins at King's College London, the pair proposed in 1953 that DNA takes the form of a double helix held together by complementary base pairing. [2] The model elegantly explained how genetic information could be copied and passed from one generation to the next.

Watson, Crick, and Wilkins were awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery. [3]

Career and the Human Genome Project

Watson taught at Harvard University from 1956, where his research centered on RNA and the synthesis of proteins. In 1968 he became director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York, building it over several decades into a leading center for molecular biology and cancer research. From 1988 he helped establish and lead the Human Genome Project, the international effort to map the complete human genetic sequence. [1]

Writing

In 1968 Watson published The Double Helix, a candid personal account of the race to determine the structure of DNA. Frank about the personalities and rivalries involved, the book became a best seller and a landmark of popular science writing. [4] He also authored influential textbooks, most notably Molecular Biology of the Gene.

Legacy and controversy

Watson is regarded as one of the most influential biologists of the twentieth century, and the co-discovery of the DNA double helix ranks among the defining achievements of modern science. His many honors include the Copley Medal, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the National Medal of Science. [1] In his later years, public statements linking race and intelligence drew widespread condemnation and led Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory to revoke his honorary titles in 2019. [1] He died on 6 November 2025.
