James Gosling

James Gosling (b. 1955) is a Canadian computer scientist best known as the creator of the Java programming language.^[1] Developed while he was at Sun Microsystems, Java became one of the most widely used programming languages in the world, and Gosling is often referred to as "the father of Java."

Early life and education

James Arthur Gosling was born on 19 May 1955 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.^[1] He attended William Aberhart High School before earning a Bachelor of Science in computer science from the University of Calgary in 1977. He went on to complete a PhD in computer science at Carnegie Mellon University in 1983.^[2]

During his doctoral studies, Gosling wrote a version of the Emacs text editor known as Gosling Emacs (or Gosmacs), one of the first implementations of Emacs to run on Unix.

Sun Microsystems and Java

Gosling joined Sun Microsystems in 1984, where he spent much of his career. In the early 1990s he led a small team, informally known as the Green Project, that set out to develop software for consumer electronic devices.^[1] The programming language the team created was originally called Oak and later renamed Java, which was publicly introduced in 1995.

Java was designed around a portable bytecode executed by the Java Virtual Machine, allowing programs to run on many different platforms without modification. This "write once, run anywhere" approach helped Java become a foundation for enterprise software, web applications, and, later, the Android mobile platform.^[1]

Later career

After Oracle Corporation acquired Sun Microsystems in 2010, Gosling left the company.^[1] He subsequently held roles at Google and at the ocean-robotics firm Liquid Robotics, and in 2017 he joined Amazon Web Services as a Distinguished Engineer.

Honours and legacy

Gosling has received numerous honours for his contributions to computing. He was awarded the ACM Software System Award,^[3] the IEEE John von Neumann Medal, and the Hitachi Tsutomu Kanai Award, and he is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery. In recognition of his influence on the field, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada.^[2] His design of Java remains one of the most consequential contributions to modern software development.
