Ilya Sutskever (born 1986) is a Russian-born Israeli-Canadian computer scientist regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern artificial intelligence. [1] He co-authored the landmark AlexNet neural network in 2012 and in 2015 co-founded OpenAI, where as chief scientist he helped drive the development of the GPT large language models. [2] In 2024 he left OpenAI to found Safe Superintelligence Inc. [3]

Early life and education

Ilya Sutskever was born on 8 December 1986 in Nizhny Novgorod, in what was then the Soviet Union, and moved with his family to Israel as a child. [1] He studied at the Open University of Israel before relocating to Canada, where he completed bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in computer science at the University of Toronto. [1] There he worked under Geoffrey Hinton, a leading figure in neural network research, an association that shaped the direction of his career. [2]

Deep learning breakthroughs

In 2012 Sutskever, together with Alex Krizhevsky and Hinton, developed AlexNet, a deep convolutional neural network that won the ImageNet image-recognition competition by a wide margin. [1] The result is widely credited with reviving interest in deep learning and demonstrating the power of training large networks on graphics processors. [2] After joining Google, he contributed to research on sequence-to-sequence learning, which applied neural networks to tasks such as machine translation. [1]

OpenAI

In 2015 Sutskever co-founded OpenAI and served as its chief scientist, guiding much of the research that produced the organization's generative models. [1] He was a central figure in the development of the GPT family of large language models, which brought conversational artificial intelligence to a broad public audience. [2] In November 2023 he was involved in a board decision to remove chief executive Sam Altman, a move that was quickly reversed amid internal upheaval. [1]

Safe Superintelligence

Sutskever left OpenAI in 2024 and founded Safe Superintelligence Inc., a company dedicated to building advanced artificial intelligence with safety as its central aim. [3] The venture reflected his long-standing view that increasingly capable systems must remain aligned with human interests. [3]

Recognition

Sutskever was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in recognition of his contributions to machine learning. [2] He is widely considered one of the most influential researchers in the field, and his work spanning computer vision, language modelling, and AI safety has helped define the trajectory of contemporary artificial intelligence.
