Hideo Kojima (b. 1963) is a Japanese video game designer, producer, and writer widely regarded as one of the most influential creators in the medium, known for the Metal Gear series and for pioneering cinematic storytelling in games. [1]

Early life and career

Kojima was born in Setagaya, Tokyo, and developed an early interest in film and storytelling that later shaped his approach to game design. He joined the Japanese entertainment company Konami in 1986, beginning his career during the formative years of the home-computer and console industry. [1]

Metal Gear

In 1987 Kojima directed Metal Gear for the MSX2 home computer, a title that emphasized evading enemies rather than confronting them and is widely credited with helping to establish the stealth genre. [2] The 1998 PlayStation release Metal Gear Solid brought the series worldwide acclaim, blending espionage themes with lengthy cinematic sequences and intricate plotting. Over the following decades Kojima wrote and directed numerous sequels, concluding his work on the franchise with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain in 2015.

Kojima Productions and Death Stranding

After leaving Konami in 2015, Kojima re-established Kojima Productions as an independent studio. Its first release, Death Stranding (2019), featured a cast of well-known actors and a distinctive narrative style, and was followed by Death Stranding 2: On the Beach in 2025. [3]

Style and legacy

Kojima is frequently described as an auteur whose work merges interactive gameplay with film-influenced narrative, genre commentary, and experimentation with the conventions of the medium. His games are noted for extended cutscenes, metafictional touches, and engagement with themes such as nuclear deterrence, surveillance, and human connection.

Kojima has repeatedly cited cinema as a central influence on his creative philosophy, describing much of his life as being shaped by the films he absorbed.

He has received numerous industry honors recognizing his career, including a Game Developers Choice Lifetime Achievement Award, a BAFTA Fellowship, and The Game Awards' Industry Icon Award. [1]
