George W. Bush (born 1946) is an American politician and businessman who served as the 43rd president of the United States from 2001 to 2009. A member of the Republican Party, he had previously served as governor of Texas. [1]

Early life and business

George Walker Bush was born on 6 July 1946 in New Haven, Connecticut, the eldest son of President George H. W. Bush. He was educated at Yale University and Harvard Business School and worked in the Texas oil industry before becoming a part-owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team. [1]

Governor and president

Bush was elected governor of Texas in 1994. In the closely contested 2000 presidential election he defeated Al Gore, and he was re-elected in 2004. [1][2]

Presidency, 2001 to 2009

His presidency was defined by the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, after which he launched the war in Afghanistan and, in 2003, the invasion of Iraq, and created the Department of Homeland Security. His second term saw the response to Hurricane Katrina and the onset of the 2008 financial crisis. [2][3]
