Eli Whitney (1765 - 1825) was an American inventor and manufacturer best known for devising the cotton gin, a machine that mechanized the separation of cotton fiber from its seeds. [1] Patented in 1794, the device dramatically increased the profitability of short-staple cotton and transformed the agricultural economy of the American South. Early life and education

Eli Whitney was born on 8 December 1765 in Westborough, Massachusetts, into a farming family. [1] He displayed an early aptitude for mechanics, reportedly operating a small nail-making workshop as a teenager during the American Revolutionary War. [2] After attending Leicester Academy, he enrolled at Yale College, graduating in 1792 with the intention of studying law. [1]

The cotton gin

Following his graduation, Whitney traveled to the South to take up a tutoring post in Georgia. While staying at Mulberry Grove, the plantation of Catherine Greene, the widow of the Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene, he learned of the difficulty planters faced in separating the sticky seeds from short-staple cotton by hand. [2] Within months he designed a machine that used a rotating cylinder fitted with wire hooks to pull the fiber through a mesh while combs stripped away the seeds. [1] He received a patent for the cotton gin in 1794. Although the device was widely copied and Whitney struggled to profit from it through the courts, it made the large-scale cultivation of cotton enormously profitable and, in doing so, entrenched the institution of slavery across the Southern states. Interchangeable parts and manufacturing

Frustrated by the meager returns from his patent, Whitney turned to firearms manufacturing. In 1798 he secured a contract from the United States government to produce 10,000 muskets, and he became an advocate of building weapons from standardized, interchangeable components. [1] Although the muskets were delivered years behind schedule and historians have since questioned how fully his early production achieved true interchangeability, his promotion of the concept helped popularize the system of division of labor and machine tooling that came to characterize American industry. Later life and legacy

Whitney established an armory near New Haven, Connecticut, where he continued to manufacture arms and refine his methods until his death on 8 January 1825. [1] His cotton gin is remembered as one of the pivotal inventions of the era, credited both with fueling the growth of the American textile economy and with the tragic consequence of expanding slave labor. [2] For his contributions to invention and manufacturing, he was later inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the Machine Tool Hall of Fame. [3]
