Edgar Frank Codd (1923–2003) was an English-born computer scientist and mathematician who invented the relational model of data, the theoretical foundation on which relational database management systems are built. [1] Working at IBM, he proposed organising data into simple tables governed by mathematical logic, an idea that reshaped how information is stored and queried worldwide. [2]

Early life and education

Codd was born on 19 August 1923 on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England, and attended Poole Grammar School. [1] He studied mathematics and chemistry at Exeter College, Oxford, and served as a pilot in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. [1] After the war he emigrated to the United States and later earned graduate degrees in computer science from the University of Michigan.

Career at IBM

Codd spent most of his career at IBM, which he joined in 1949, initially working on early computing hardware and programming. [1] He eventually settled at IBM's San Jose Research Laboratory in California, where he turned his attention to the problem of how large organisations could store and retrieve data reliably and flexibly.

The relational model

In 1970 Codd published "A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks" in the journal Communications of the ACM. [2] The paper argued that data should be represented as mathematical relations, or tables, independent of how it was physically stored, and manipulated through operations grounded in predicate logic. This separation of the logical view from physical storage freed programmers from writing code tied to specific file structures.

The relational model provided a rigorous, mathematically based alternative to the navigational database systems of the era, allowing users to describe what data they wanted rather than how to find it.

Codd's ideas inspired research prototypes such as IBM's System R and the query language that evolved into SQL, now the dominant standard for interacting with databases. [1] He later formulated a set of guidelines, widely known as Codd's twelve rules, defining what qualifies a system as genuinely relational.

Later work and legacy

In the 1980s and 1990s Codd extended his work to analytical processing, helping to popularise the concept and term "OLAP" (online analytical processing). [1] For his contributions he received the ACM A.M. Turing Award in 1981, computing's most prestigious honour, and was named an IBM Fellow and an ACM Fellow, as well as a recipient of the Computer Pioneer Award. [3]

Codd died on 18 April 2003 in Aventura, Florida. [1] His relational model remains one of the most influential ideas in computer science, underlying the database systems that power banking, commerce, government, and the web.
