Salman Amin "Sal" Khan (b. 1976) is an American educator, entrepreneur, and computer scientist best known as the founder of Khan Academy, a nonprofit that offers free online lessons across mathematics, science, and other subjects to learners around the world. [1] Trained as an engineer and financial analyst, he built the organization from a set of tutoring videos into one of the most widely used educational resources on the internet.
Early life and education
Khan was born on October 11, 1976, in Metairie, Louisiana, and attended Grace King High School in the New Orleans area. [1] He went on to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned degrees in mathematics and in electrical engineering and computer science. [1] He later completed a Master of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. [2]
From tutoring to Khan Academy
Before founding Khan Academy, Khan worked as a financial analyst at a hedge fund. [1] In 2004 he began remotely tutoring a younger cousin in mathematics, and as demand from other relatives grew he started posting instructional videos on YouTube so that lessons could be watched at any time. Khan Academy expanded from short video lessons into a comprehensive learning platform featuring practice exercises, progress tracking, and full courses across many subjects and grade levels. Khan set out his educational philosophy in the book The One World Schoolhouse: Education Reimagined (2012).
