Robert Hooke (1635 - 1703) was an English natural philosopher, architect, and polymath whose experimental work spanned mechanics, microscopy, astronomy, and biology.[1] As the first Curator of Experiments at the Royal Society, he became one of the most inventive and wide-ranging scientists of seventeenth-century England.

Early life and education

Robert Hooke was born on 18 July 1635 at Freshwater, on the Isle of Wight, the son of a clergyman. Showing an early aptitude for mechanical devices and drawing, he was sent to Westminster School in London and then to the University of Oxford, where he studied at Wadham College and later became associated with Christ Church.[2] At Oxford he assisted leading natural philosophers, notably the chemist Robert Boyle, for whom he helped design and build an improved air pump.

The Royal Society and Micrographia

In 1662 Hooke was appointed the first Curator of Experiments to the newly founded Royal Society, and he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society the following year.[3] The post required him to demonstrate several new experiments at each weekly meeting, a demand that displayed his extraordinary ingenuity. In 1665 he published Micrographia, a lavishly illustrated study of observations made with the microscope and telescope. Examining a thin slice of cork, Hooke described its tiny compartments as "cells", introducing a term that remains fundamental to biology.[4]

Scientific contributions

Hooke is remembered in physics for the elastic principle that bears his name: the extension of a spring is proportional to the force applied to it, a relationship he summarized in 1678 in the Latin phrase ut tensio, sic vis ("as the extension, so the force"). His interests ranged widely, encompassing the theory of light, combustion, the motion of the planets, and the design of scientific instruments. He proposed that gravitation followed an inverse-square law and corresponded with Isaac Newton on orbital motion, a subject that later became the source of a bitter priority dispute between the two men.[2]

Architecture and the rebuilding of London

After the Great Fire of London in 1666, Hooke served as one of the surveyors charged with rebuilding the city. Working closely with his friend Sir Christopher Wren, he contributed to numerous projects, including the Monument to the Great Fire of London and the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. Architecture and surveying occupied a large part of his later career.

Legacy

Hooke died in London on 3 March 1703. His reputation was for a long time overshadowed, partly by his quarrels with Newton and partly because no verified contemporary portrait of him is known to survive. Modern scholarship has re-established him as one of the most versatile experimental scientists of his age, whose work in microscopy, mechanics, astronomy, and architecture left a lasting mark on English science.[1]
