Richard Phillips Feynman (1918 - 1988) was an American theoretical physicist whose work on quantum electrodynamics reshaped modern physics and earned him a share of the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics.[1] Renowned equally for his diagrammatic method of visualizing particle interactions and for his gifts as a teacher and communicator, Feynman became one of the most influential and widely known scientists of the twentieth century.[2]
Early life and education
Feynman was born on May 11, 1918, in the Queens borough of New York City, where an early curiosity about mechanics and mathematics was encouraged by his father. He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning his bachelor's degree, and completed his doctorate at Princeton University in 1942 under the supervision of John Archibald Wheeler.[1] As a student he was named a Putnam Fellow for his performance in the national mathematics competition.
Manhattan Project
During the Second World War, Feynman joined the Manhattan Project, working first at Princeton and then at the Los Alamos laboratory in New Mexico, where he contributed to the development of the atomic bomb.[4] Although one of the youngest group leaders, he became known for his talent at solving practical problems and for a mischievous habit of picking the locks of safes that held classified documents.
Quantum electrodynamics
Feynman's most celebrated scientific achievement was his reformulation of quantum electrodynamics (QED), the theory describing how light and matter interact. He introduced a set of pictorial representations, now universally called Feynman diagrams, that made otherwise intractable calculations manageable.[1] For this work he shared the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics with Julian Schwinger and Sin-Itiro Tomonaga, who had independently arrived at compatible formulations.[2] He also developed the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics and contributed to the theory of superfluidity and the weak interaction.
Teaching and public life
As a professor at the California Institute of Technology, Feynman was a legendary lecturer whose introductory course was published as The Feynman Lectures on Physics, a work still widely read decades later.[3] His popular memoirs, including Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!, introduced his irreverent personality to a broad audience. In 1986 he served on the Rogers Commission investigating the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, where he famously demonstrated the failure of a rubber O-ring seal by immersing a sample in a glass of ice water.[1]
Legacy
Feynman died in Los Angeles on February 15, 1988, after a long illness. Beyond the Nobel Prize, his honors included the Albert Einstein Award, the National Medal of Science, and the Niels Bohr International Gold Medal.[4] His diagrams, lectures, and writings continue to shape how physics is practiced and taught, and he is remembered as a rare figure who combined deep theoretical insight with an unusual gift for explaining science to the public.
