René Descartes (1596 - 1650) was a French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist widely regarded as a founder of modern Western philosophy. [1] Seeking certain knowledge on rational foundations, he framed the celebrated principle "Cogito, ergo sum" ("I think, therefore I am"), and his development of analytic geometry forged an enduring link between algebra and geometry.

Early life and education

Descartes was born on 31 March 1596 in La Haye en Touraine, France, a town later renamed Descartes in his honour. From around 1607 he studied at the Jesuit Collège Royal Henry-Le-Grand at La Flèche, where he received a rigorous grounding in classics, logic, and traditional Aristotelian philosophy. [1] He afterwards took a law degree at the University of Poitiers, though he never practised law, choosing instead to pursue learning through travel and independent study.

Method and philosophy

Dissatisfied with the uncertainty of received scholastic teaching, Descartes sought a secure foundation for knowledge through systematic doubt. In his Discourse on the Method (1637) and Meditations on First Philosophy (1641) he argued that while every belief might be doubted, the very act of thinking proves the existence of the thinker. [2]

I think, therefore I am.

From this first certainty he attempted to rebuild a body of reliable knowledge, defending a sharp distinction between mind and body that came to be known as Cartesian dualism. His rationalist emphasis on reason as the primary source of knowledge profoundly shaped subsequent European thought. [3]

Mathematics and science

Descartes made lasting contributions to mathematics, above all through analytic geometry, which unites algebra and geometry by describing shapes with coordinates and equations. The Cartesian coordinate system is named after him. [1] He also worked on optics, describing the law of refraction, and advanced a mechanistic account of the physical world in which nature could be explained through matter in motion.

Later years and death

Descartes spent much of his productive life in the Dutch Republic, where he found the freedom to write and publish. In 1649 he accepted an invitation from Queen Christina of Sweden to Stockholm. The demanding schedule and harsh northern winter are traditionally said to have weakened his health, and he died there of pneumonia on 11 February 1650. [1]

Legacy

Often called the "father of modern philosophy," Descartes helped shift Western thought away from medieval scholasticism toward reason and method. [4] His mathematical innovations remain foundational, and his philosophical questions about knowledge, certainty, and the relationship between mind and body continue to be debated today.
