Pierre-Simon Laplace (1749–1827) was a French mathematician, astronomer, and physicist who ranks among the most influential scientists of his age. Often called the “Newton of France,” he extended Newtonian mechanics to the entire Solar System and laid much of the mathematical groundwork for modern probability theory.[1]
Early life and education
Laplace was born on 23 March 1749 in Beaumont-en-Auge, in the Normandy region of France.[1] He studied at the University of Caen Normandy, where he was initially intended for a career in the Church, but his mathematical gifts led him to abandon theology.[2] In 1768 he moved to Paris, where the mathematician Jean le Rond d'Alembert recognized his ability and helped him obtain a teaching post at the École Militaire.[2]
Celestial mechanics
Laplace's greatest achievement was the systematic application of Newton's law of gravitation to the motions of the planets and their satellites. In a series of works culminating in the five-volume Traité de mécanique céleste (Celestial Mechanics), published between 1799 and 1825, he sought to show that the Solar System is dynamically stable and that its apparent irregularities are periodic rather than cumulative.[1][3]
He also advanced the nebular hypothesis, proposing that the Solar System condensed from a rotating cloud of gas that contracted and flattened under its own gravity—an idea that remains foundational to modern theories of planetary formation.[3]
Mathematics and probability
Laplace made lasting contributions across mathematics. His name is attached to the Laplace equation and the Laplacian operator, both central to potential theory and physics, and to the Laplace transform, a technique widely used in engineering and applied mathematics.[1] In his Théorie analytique des probabilités (1812) he developed the mathematical foundations of probability, including what is now called Bayesian inference, and applied statistical reasoning to problems in astronomy and the physical sciences.[3]

Public life and honours
Laplace held prominent public roles during a turbulent period of French history. A member of the French Academy of Sciences, he briefly served as Minister of the Interior under Napoleon in 1799 before being replaced, and he was later created a marquis during the Bourbon Restoration.[2] Among his many distinctions were fellowship of the Royal Society and the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, and he is one of the 72 scientists whose names are inscribed on the Eiffel Tower.[1]
Legacy
Laplace died in Paris on 5 March 1827.[1] His work shaped the development of mathematical physics, astronomy, and probability for generations, and the many concepts that bear his name remain in everyday use across science and engineering.[3]
