Pierre Curie (1859 - 1906) was a French physicist whose fundamental contributions to crystallography, magnetism, and radioactivity made him a pioneer of modern atomic physics. Together with his wife, Marie Curie, and Henri Becquerel, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 for their joint research into the radiation phenomena discovered by Becquerel. [1]

Early life and education

Pierre Curie was born in Paris on 15 May 1859, the son of a physician. He was educated at home rather than in the conventional school system, an upbringing that allowed him to develop his mathematical and scientific abilities at his own pace. [1] By the age of eighteen he had earned the equivalent of a higher degree from the Faculty of Sciences at the Sorbonne, though he lacked the means to pursue a formal doctorate immediately and instead took a post as a laboratory assistant.

Early scientific work

Working with his elder brother Jacques Curie, Pierre discovered piezoelectricity in 1880, showing that certain crystals produce an electric charge when subjected to mechanical stress. [2] The brothers developed instruments, including a sensitive electrometer, that would later prove essential to the study of radioactivity. Pierre also carried out important research on magnetism, formulating what became known as Curie's law, which relates a material's magnetic properties to temperature, and identifying the Curie point, the temperature above which certain materials lose their permanent magnetism. Radioactivity and the Nobel Prize

In 1895 Pierre married Marie Sklodowska, a Polish-born physicist, beginning one of the most celebrated scientific partnerships in history. Following Henri Becquerel's discovery of radiation from uranium, the Curies undertook a systematic investigation of the phenomenon that Marie named radioactivity. Their painstaking work with pitchblende led to the identification of two new elements, polonium and radium, in 1898. [1] For this research the Nobel Committee awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics jointly to Pierre Curie, Marie Curie, and Henri Becquerel. [1]

Death and legacy

On 19 April 1906 Pierre Curie was killed in a street accident in Paris, struck by a horse-drawn vehicle. He was forty-six years old. [1] His scientific legacy endures in the concepts and units that bear his name, including the Curie temperature and the curie, a unit of radioactivity. The instruments and methods he helped devise laid groundwork for twentieth-century nuclear physics, while the research he shared with Marie Curie transformed the understanding of matter and radiation.
