Norbert Wiener (1894 - 1964) was an American mathematician and philosopher who founded cybernetics, the interdisciplinary study of control and communication in living organisms and machines.[1] A child prodigy who earned his doctorate from Harvard University at eighteen, he spent most of his career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where his work on stochastic processes, signal processing, and feedback systems helped shape modern applied mathematics and the foundations of computing.

Early life and education

Norbert Wiener was born on November 26, 1894, in Columbia, Missouri, the son of Leo Wiener, a Harvard professor of Slavic languages who closely directed his son's early schooling. A precocious student, Wiener entered Tufts College and earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics at fourteen.[2] He pursued graduate study at Harvard, receiving a PhD in mathematical logic in 1912 at the age of eighteen. Postdoctoral travel took him to the University of Cambridge, where he studied under Bertrand Russell, and to the University of Göttingen, where he worked alongside David Hilbert.

Academic career

In 1919 Wiener joined the mathematics faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he remained for the rest of his career. During the 1920s and 1930s he made fundamental contributions to the analysis of Brownian motion, harmonic analysis, and Tauberian theorems, work recognized by the American Mathematical Society with the Bôcher Memorial Prize in 1933.[1] During the Second World War he researched the automatic prediction and control of anti-aircraft fire, a problem in feedback and forecasting that would inform his later thinking.

Cybernetics

In 1948 Wiener published Cybernetics: Or Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine, coining the term from the Greek word for "steersman." The book argued that feedback and information processing were shared principles underlying both biological organisms and mechanical or electronic systems.[1] It became an unexpected popular success and gave a name to an emerging interdisciplinary movement. Wiener explored its social dimensions in The Human Use of Human Beings (1950), which examined the consequences of automation and communication technology for society.

Contributions to mathematics

Beyond cybernetics, Wiener's mathematical legacy includes the rigorous theory of the Wiener process, a model of Brownian motion central to stochastic calculus, and the Wiener filter, a method for recovering signals obscured by noise.[3] His name is also attached to the Wiener–Khinchin theorem, the Paley–Wiener theorem, and the Wiener–Hopf method, results widely applied in probability, analysis, and engineering.

Legacy

Wiener received the National Medal of Science in 1963, presented by President Lyndon B. Johnson shortly before his death. He wrote two autobiographies, Ex-Prodigy (1953) and I Am a Mathematician (1956), and became an outspoken commentator on the ethical responsibilities of scientists in an age of automation.[2] He died on March 18, 1964, while visiting Stockholm. The field he named continues to shape control theory, robotics, artificial intelligence, and systems biology.
