Muḥammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi (c. 750 - c. 846) was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, and geographer who worked at the House of Wisdom in Baghdad during the early Abbasid caliphate. [1] His treatise on al-jabr wa'l-muqabala laid the foundations of algebra as an independent discipline and supplied the word algebra itself. [2] The Latinized form of his name, Algoritmi, is the origin of the term algorithm, reflecting his role in spreading the Hindu-Arabic decimal system to the wider world. [3]
Early life and the House of Wisdom
Al-Khwarizmi was born around 750, his family name pointing to the region of Khwarazm south of the Aral Sea. [1] He spent his productive years in Baghdad, then the intellectual center of the Islamic world, where he was associated with the Bayt al-Hikma, or House of Wisdom, a scholarly institution supported by the Abbasid court. [2] There he took part in a broad program of translating and extending Greek, Indian, and Persian learning, working alongside other scholars under the patronage of the caliph al-Ma'mun.
The founding of algebra
His most influential work, Al-Kitab al-mukhtasar fi hisab al-jabr wa'l-muqabala (The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing), presented systematic methods for solving linear and quadratic equations. [2] The Arabic term al-jabr, meaning the restoring or completing of terms across an equation, entered European languages as the word algebra. [3] Rather than relying on symbolic notation, al-Khwarizmi expressed his procedures in words and geometric justification, offering a general framework that could be applied to practical problems of inheritance, trade, and surveying.
Numerals and the word algorithm
In a separate treatise, known in Latin as Algoritmi de numero Indorum, al-Khwarizmi explained the Hindu-Arabic decimal place-value system and methods of calculation using its ten digits, including the use of zero. [1] Latin translations of this work helped introduce these numerals to medieval Europe, and the corrupted form of his name in those translations, Algoritmi, eventually gave rise to the modern word algorithm. Astronomy and geography
Beyond mathematics, al-Khwarizmi compiled astronomical tables, the Zij al-Sindhind, drawing on Indian and Greek sources, and wrote a revised geography that corrected and expanded the coordinates of Ptolemy's work. [2] These contributions reflected the encyclopedic range of his interests, which also touched on the construction of instruments and the reckoning of the calendar.
Legacy
Al-Khwarizmi died around 846. [1] The transmission of his writings into Latin from the twelfth century onward made him one of the most influential figures in the history of mathematics, shaping the vocabulary and methods of the subject for centuries. [3] Both algebra as a discipline and the concept of a step-by-step computational procedure trace their names directly to his work.
