Leonhard Euler (1707 - 1783) was a Swiss mathematician, physicist, astronomer, and engineer widely regarded as one of the greatest and most prolific mathematicians in history.[1] Working chiefly at the academies of Saint Petersburg and Berlin, he made foundational contributions across nearly every branch of mathematics and introduced much of the notation still used today, including the symbols for the constant e and the imaginary unit i, as well as the modern concept of a mathematical function.
Early life and education
Leonhard Euler was born on 15 April 1707 in Basel, in the Old Swiss Confederacy.[1] He entered the University of Basel at a young age, where he studied under Johann Bernoulli, one of Europe's foremost mathematicians. Bernoulli recognised Euler's exceptional talent and gave him private instruction, guiding the young student toward advanced mathematics.[2] Euler completed his studies in Basel before seeking a scientific post abroad.
Career in Saint Petersburg and Berlin
In 1727 Euler joined the Imperial Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg, where he advanced rapidly and came to hold a senior position in mathematics.[3] In 1741 he accepted an invitation from Frederick the Great to the Berlin Academy in the Kingdom of Prussia, where he spent some twenty-five years and produced a vast body of work. In 1766 he returned to Saint Petersburg, remaining in Russia for the rest of his life.
Mathematical contributions
Euler's output spanned analysis, number theory, geometry, mechanics, fluid dynamics, optics, astronomy, and music theory.[1] He is especially celebrated for Euler's identity, e^(iπ) + 1 = 0, often cited as one of the most beautiful equations in mathematics, and for the broader formula relating exponential and trigonometric functions. He founded the field of graph theory through his solution to the Seven Bridges of Königsberg problem, introduced the Euler characteristic in topology, and helped formalise the modern notion of a function.
Later years and blindness
Euler suffered from deteriorating eyesight and became almost totally blind in his later years, yet his productivity did not diminish. Aided by a remarkable memory and by assistants who transcribed his dictation, he continued to produce important work.[2] He died in Saint Petersburg on 18 September 1783.
Legacy
Euler's collected works, the Opera Omnia, fill more than seventy volumes, making him one of the most prolific scientific authors of all time.[3] His name is attached to numerous theorems, equations, constants, and formulas throughout mathematics and physics, and his notation and results remain foundational to the modern discipline.
