Kurt Gödel (1906 – 1978) was an Austrian-American logician, mathematician, and philosopher of mathematics, widely regarded as one of the most influential logicians in history. He is best known for his two incompleteness theorems, published in 1931, which demonstrated that within any consistent formal system rich enough to express arithmetic there exist true statements that the system cannot prove. Early life and education

Kurt Gödel was born on 28 April 1906 in Brno, then part of Austria-Hungary and today in the Czech Republic. A precocious and intensely curious child, he entered the University of Vienna in 1924, initially studying physics before turning his focus to mathematics and logic. In Vienna he came into contact with the philosophers and scientists of the Vienna Circle, though he did not share their strict logical positivism. [2]

The incompleteness theorems

In 1931 Gödel published his landmark paper on formally undecidable propositions, establishing the results now known as Gödel's incompleteness theorems. The first theorem shows that any consistent formal system capable of expressing basic arithmetic must contain statements that are true but unprovable within the system. The second theorem shows that such a system cannot demonstrate its own consistency. [3]

These results overturned the hope, associated with David Hilbert's program, that all of mathematics could be placed on a complete and self-verifying axiomatic foundation.

Later work and Princeton

During the 1930s Gödel also proved the completeness of first-order logic and made major contributions to set theory, showing that the axiom of choice and the generalized continuum hypothesis are consistent with the standard axioms. With the rise of Nazism and the annexation of Austria, he emigrated to the United States, settling at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, where he became a permanent member and later a professor. At Princeton he formed a close friendship with Albert Einstein, and in 1949 he produced an exact solution to Einstein's field equations describing a rotating universe, a result with striking implications for the nature of time. He became an American citizen in 1948.

Legacy

Gödel received the Albert Einstein Award in 1951 and the National Medal of Science in 1974, and he was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society. His work reshaped mathematical logic, the philosophy of mathematics, and the theoretical foundations of computer science. In his later years he struggled with ill health and became increasingly reclusive; he died in Princeton on 14 January 1978. [4]
