Joseph John Thomson (1856 - 1940), known as J. J. Thomson, was a British physicist credited with the discovery of the electron, the first subatomic particle to be identified. Through experiments on cathode rays at the University of Cambridge, he demonstrated that these rays were composed of negatively charged particles far smaller than atoms, overturning the notion that the atom was indivisible.[1]

Early life and education

Thomson was born on 18 December 1856 in Cheetham Hill, near Manchester, England. He entered Owens College (later part of the University of Manchester) at a young age before winning a scholarship to Trinity College at the University of Cambridge, where he studied mathematics.[1] He remained closely associated with Trinity College and Cambridge for the rest of his career.

Discovery of the electron

In 1897, while working at the Cavendish Laboratory, Thomson conducted a series of experiments with cathode-ray tubes. By measuring how the rays were deflected by electric and magnetic fields, he showed that they consisted of discrete negatively charged particles with a mass thousands of times smaller than that of a hydrogen atom.[2] This particle, later called the electron, was the first subatomic particle to be discovered and established that atoms have internal structure.

The atom, long regarded as indivisible, was shown to contain still smaller charged constituents.

Thomson later proposed the so-called "plum pudding" model of the atom, in which electrons were embedded within a diffuse sphere of positive charge. Although the model was superseded by Ernest Rutherford's nuclear model, it represented an important early attempt to describe atomic structure.

Later research and honours

Thomson continued to investigate positively charged rays, and his work in this area helped lead to the discovery of isotopes and the development of mass spectrometry.[1] He served as Cavendish Professor of Physics at Cambridge and, from 1918, as Master of Trinity College. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1906 for his research on the conduction of electricity by gases, and he received many other honours, including the Copley Medal, the Royal Medal, and the Hughes Medal. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and later served as its president, and was knighted in 1908.[3]

Legacy

Thomson was also an influential teacher and mentor. Several of his research assistants, as well as his son George Paget Thomson, went on to receive Nobel Prizes.[1] He died on 30 August 1940 in Cambridge and was buried in Westminster Abbey, near other eminent British scientists. His identification of the electron is regarded as a foundational moment in modern physics.
