John McCarthy (1927 - 2011) was an American computer scientist and cognitive scientist widely regarded as one of the founders of the field of artificial intelligence. He coined the term "artificial intelligence," created the Lisp programming language, and helped shape the theoretical foundations of the discipline over a career spanning more than five decades. [1]

Early life and education

John McCarthy was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1927. He showed an early aptitude for mathematics and enrolled at the California Institute of Technology, where he earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1948. He went on to complete a doctorate in mathematics at Princeton University in 1951. [3]

Founding artificial intelligence

In 1955 McCarthy coined the term "artificial intelligence" in a proposal for a summer research project on machine intelligence. The following year he helped organize the 1956 Dartmouth Workshop, an event now widely considered the founding moment of AI as a distinct field of study. [2]

Lisp and time-sharing

In 1958 McCarthy invented Lisp, a programming language built around recursion and the manipulation of symbolic expressions. It became the dominant language of AI research and remains one of the oldest high-level programming languages still in use. During the same period he was an early advocate of time-sharing, the idea that many users could interact with a single computer at once, which influenced the development of interactive and utility computing. Later research and theory

McCarthy joined Stanford University in 1962 and founded the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. Much of his later work focused on the formalization of commonsense knowledge and reasoning, including contributions such as the situation calculus and circumscription, a form of non-monotonic logic. He argued that intelligent behavior could be captured through formal logical representation of the world. [1]

Recognition and legacy

McCarthy received many of computing's highest honors, including the Turing Award in 1971, the Kyoto Prize in 1988, and the National Medal of Science in 1990. He continued to teach and research at Stanford until his retirement and died there in 2011. His ideas continue to shape modern artificial intelligence, programming language design, and the study of machine reasoning. [2]
