John Forbes Nash (1928 - 2015) was an American mathematician whose foundational contributions to game theory, differential geometry, and partial differential equations reshaped several fields. He is best known for the concept of the Nash equilibrium, a cornerstone of modern economic and strategic analysis. [1] For this work he shared the 1994 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, and in 2015 he received the Abel Prize for his contributions to nonlinear partial differential equations. [2]

Early life and education

John Forbes Nash Jr. was born on 13 June 1928 in Bluefield, West Virginia. He showed an early aptitude for mathematics and science, and enrolled at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University), where he initially studied chemical engineering before turning to mathematics. [1] He completed his undergraduate and master's degrees there and moved to Princeton University for doctoral study, arriving with a now-famous one-line letter of recommendation describing him as a genius. [3]

Game theory and the Nash equilibrium

Nash's 1950 Princeton doctoral dissertation, only some 28 pages long, introduced what became known as the Nash equilibrium: a set of strategies in a non-cooperative game in which no participant can gain by changing their own strategy while the others hold theirs fixed. [1] The idea generalized earlier work by John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern beyond two-player zero-sum games and gave economists a rigorous tool for analyzing competition, bargaining, and conflict. [2] It later became central to fields ranging from economics and political science to evolutionary biology.

Mathematical contributions

Although the equilibrium concept brought him wide fame, Nash regarded his work in pure mathematics as more significant. He proved the Nash embedding theorems, showing that abstract Riemannian manifolds can be isometrically embedded in Euclidean space, and made deep advances in the theory of nonlinear partial differential equations. [3] These results influenced later mathematicians and were cited when he was awarded the Abel Prize.

Illness and later life

In the late 1950s Nash began to experience symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia, which interrupted his academic career for many years and led to repeated hospitalizations. [1] He gradually recovered from the mid-1980s onward and returned to research and to the Princeton community. His life and struggle with mental illness were chronicled in Sylvia Nasar's biography A Beautiful Mind and the 2001 film of the same name. [3]

Legacy and honors

Nash received the John von Neumann Theory Prize, the 1994 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences shared with Reinhard Selten and John Harsanyi, and, jointly with Louis Nirenberg, the 2015 Abel Prize. [2] He and his wife Alicia died in a car accident in New Jersey on 23 May 2015, days after he received the Abel Prize. [1] His name endures in the Nash equilibrium, which remains one of the most widely used concepts in the social sciences.
